Hey there.
Premier 5.1 is full of bugs when it comes to digital capture and digital codecs. Your gonna need Premier 6 for trouble free editing.
Despin out.

welcome to the wonderful world of video editing....
from my experience Ive never used the Premier capture utility, always captured using something else, and imported these files into a Premier project.
Make sure you download the 5.1c upgrade from Adobe.
goto project -> settings, and make sure your capture settings are correct.
Take a look at the adobe tech support pages:
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14@@.ee6b372
they are full of helpful tips.
To get more minutes for your Gigs you need to tweak the data rate of the capture, (make it lower) and any other settings your capture software will give you.
As far as transitions are concerned, make sure you render the transitions before you preview them, or preview to RAM. make sure the 'preview to RAM' box is checked in Project->settings->keyframe and rendering options
Buy a 16mm steinbeck flat bed editor and shoot on film :-)
Good luck.

Actually there's a compatibility issue with xp and premiere if I remember correctly - which sounds just like your problem. It which involves simply renaming two files.
I cant remember whether this was 5 or six but I'm certain that 6.1 is 100% compatible.

Dear Chance,
I agree with the others that you will need Premiere 6 for your laptop. Premiere 6 has support for OHCI compliant Firewire cards. I assume the one on your laptop is OHCI compliant. If you do get Premiere 6 then I would strongly recommend installing the 6.02 update as this fixes known issues with Prem 6 and laptops.
One other recommendation I can make is Pinnacle Edition. You can use there trial version free. It is not time limited, it just puts a Pinnacle watermark on your output. Plus it's a very good editor too. If you e-mail me your address I can get someone to send you a copy of the trial version.
Regards
Mark Smith
